Anchor Bolts & Anchor Rods

Also known as an anchor bolt, the anchor rod is a steel rod that is cast in concrete or grouted into concrete and masonry to attach a steel structure to a foundation. The connection offers stability and prevents movement of the building.

Bent bolts are placed in a foundation as the concrete is being poured. Because of this, they are extremely resistant to disturbance and are ideal for large, heavy structures.

ASTM F1554 Anchor Rods Specifications

ASTM F1554 is the specification that designates a type of anchor rod that fall into three grades of chemical properties and yield strengths. In this case, the grades are 36, 55, and 105. The specification covers bent anchor bolts, straight anchor rods that are headed or headless. These rods are made of a variety of materials including carbon, carbon boron, alloy, and high-strength, low alloy steel. The ASTM F1554 specification governs the design, manufacture and testing of these specific anchor bolts and rods.

The ASTM F1554 grade 36 anchor rods are made of A36, low carbon steel. This is the standard grade that covers anchor rods in diameters range from ½-inch through 4-inch. Grade 36 can be substituted with Grade 55 s1. We substitute this because you get a stronger material at the same price.

Our F1554 grade 55 Anchor Rods are made of rolled domestic bar stock. They are commonly used in applications where no more than 55,000 ksi yield strength is required in connecting or anchoring applications.

Although these anchor rods are intended for use in anchoring applications, they can be used in connecting applications as well.  The Thru Bolts  are available in 5/8-inch to 1/1/2-inch diameters.

They are made of grade 55 carbon steel, are weldable and can be used rather than ASTM F1554 grade 36 rods.

The F1554 grade 105 anchor rods are made of medium carbon alloy steel that has been heat-treated to develop the desired mechanical value. This rod is the highest strength version of the F1554 specification. They have a minimum yield strength of 105 ksi and are offered in a range of diameters from ½-inch to 3-inches.

Although already high in strength, these anchor rods can be galvanized without any negative affect to the mechanical properties of the anchor. Moreover, they will not cause hydrogen embrittlement.

It is advised that these rods should not be welded because they develop their strength through heat treating. Applying heat or welding in an uncontrolled environment can change the mechanical properties of this rod.

Substituting Grade 36 with Grade 55

Customers should be aware that we do not carry Grade 36 anchor bolts and rods. Instead, when they are asked for, we provide as a substitute Grade 55 anchor bolts. Grade 55 bolts are of a higher quality and feature stronger material. Moreover, they cost the same as the 36 Grade bolts. The fact that they are stronger means that the Grade 55 bolts can more then adequately perform in applications that calls for the use of Grade 36 bolts. The substitution of the Grade 36 bolts are within the guidelines of the ASTM F1554 Anchor Bolt Specification that we are required to follow when producing Anchor bolts and rods.

As all of you are probably aware, the ASTM F1554 Anchor Bolt Specification covers straight and bent headless, carbon steel, stainless steel, and high-strength low alloy steel anchor bolts. According to the specification, anchor bolts are furnished in three strength grades –- 36, 55, and 105. The grades refer to the minimum yield strength of the bolts. Grade 36 is the lowest grade of steel. Grade 105 is the strongest grade. The ASTM Specification permits the substitution of Grade 55 for Grade 36 as long as the grade 55 material meets the S1 supplement requirement of weldability.

Abrasive & Fastening Solutions is supplying the strongest material available at the same price as the lower grade option. We find that manufacturing only Grade 55 and 105 anchor bolts allows us the opportunity to provide to you the best products at the most competitive cost.
